The Story Behind Avis

Avis draws a garden trellis across a grey ground, its green and ivory lines crossing like vines trained on a frame. The wool is hand knotted, partly left undyed, and the lattice is cut higher than the field, so the trellis stands up from the rug and catches the light.

How it was made

Construction: Hand Knotted
Every knot tied by hand on a loom, then cut to make the pile.
Knot: Ghiordes knot
The symmetrical knot, also called the Turkish knot. The yarn wraps two warp threads, which gives a firm pile.
Density: 50–80 knots per square inch
Knots in every square inch. The higher the count, the finer the detail and the longer the rug takes to knot.
Pile: Flatwoven, High-low pile

What to look for

Undyed wool
Natural wool colours, with no dye.
Textured pile
Parts of the pile are carved by hand to different heights.
Light one way, dark the other
The colour looks deeper when you face the pile and lighter from the other end.
