The Story Behind the Pakistani Bokhara Hand Knotted Rug

Bokhara rugs are named after the city of Bukhara, the market where Turkmen tribes once traded their carpets, and they carry the Turkmen gul, an octagon repeated across the field. Pakistan now makes most of the rugs sold under the name. This one sets small guls in a close net, the layout Pakistani weavers call jaldar, from jaal, the Urdu word for net, on a cream field with a wide brown border and a soft sheen.

How it was made

Construction: Hand Knotted
Every knot tied by hand on a loom, then cut to make the pile.
Knot: Ghiordes knot
The symmetrical knot, also called the Turkish knot. The yarn wraps two warp threads, which gives a firm pile.
Density: 101–140 knots per square inch
Knots in every square inch. The higher the count, the finer the detail and the longer the rug takes to knot.
Pile: Low pile

What to look for

One of a kind
This exact rug exists once. When it is sold, it is gone.
Abrash
Hand-dyed in small batches, so the colour shifts gently across the rug. Rug makers call this abrash.
Natural sheen
Washed after weaving to bring up the natural shine of the fibre.
Light one way, dark the other
The colour looks deeper when you face the pile and lighter from the other end.
